Volunteer Opportunities with the

Fairmount Park Commission

Volunteers removing invasive vines in Pennypack Park.

Fairmount Park’s Natural Lands Restoration and Environmental Education Program (NLREEP) offers many opportunities for volunteers to assist with ecological restoration. By volunteering, you will help to improve natural areas for the native animals and plants that need this habitat and assist in  preserving the parks for future generations to enjoy.

In addition, you will learn more about the park you love and meet other individuals like yourself who care about the preservation of natural lands.

Specific volunteer activities may include invasive plant removal, reforestation with native species, trail repair, erosion control, cleanups and other activities that promote healthy ecosystems.  You can participate as an individual or a group to do a specific project in any park.

Volunteers from the EPA pose with District Supervisor, Harry Clement (fourth from right), before restoring an eroded hillside in Cobbs Creek Park in Southwest Philadelphia.

In all of our restoration projects, we emphasize safety.  Each project begins with a talk on the proper use of tools and a lesson on the hazards of the project site (ticks, poison ivy, etc). We also emphasize the importance of the work that volunteers do and try to create a spirit of camaraderie and fun.
